Sweet from the dates, smooth and creamy from the vegan ice cream, this 3-Ingredient Date Shake is the epitome of summer and is too good to pass up on!
Your average ol’ milkshake just got a makeover and it’s even better than it was before 😉 Yes this shake has fruit in it but not it is not a smoothie. It’s meant to be an indulgent sweet treat…which we all deserve right?
If you’ve ever driven through Coachella Valley, you are probably familiar with their famous date shakes. If you didn’t know, it is also where > 90% of the world’s dates are grown, isn’t that wild?! A TON of the bars and restaurants in the area have their own version of the famous date shake, so today we are sharing with you the SSV recipe! Date shakes usually include a base of vanilla ice cream, dates, and milk, followed by additional ingredients to give it a personal twist.
We went with nutmeg and a pinch of salt, but we listed them as optional ingredients and kept the 3-ingredient base in tact for you to play around with. We encourage you to have fun with this shake and bring it a twist of your own– fresh fruit or even cacao powder would be great additions!

Add all of the ingredients for the shake into a high speed blender and blend until smooth, or about 30-50 seconds.
Pour the shake into 2 small glasses (or 1 large glass) and add toppings as desired. Enjoy!
Other date varieties may be used, although they may alter the flavor and texture of the shake. Some dates have a thicker skin and will results in more texture, but nonetheless, other varieties of dates will still work.
We opted not to use maraschino cherries as most are not vegan as they contain carmine (also known as Natural Red 4 or “added color”) which is an insect-derived red food coloring that comes from cochineal bugs. If you would like to use vegan maraschino cherries, check out this brand.
Have fun with this shake and bring a twist of your own! Fresh fruit or even cacao powder would be great additions!
For the glasses, we melted about 1/4 cup of vegan chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl chocolate in 30-second increments until smooth, mixing after each increment. Once melted, you can either dip the glass into the chocolate or use a small spoon to carefully distribute the chocolate round the rim, working quickly so that it does not harden. Once you have covered the rim, over a medium bowl, sprinkle on chopped peanuts, sprinkles or topping of your choice. Set it into the refrigerator to set, for about 5 minutes.
